Beliefs
The matchmaking god is believed to provide good luck to single people hoping to find love and a marriageable match. According to the legend the Old Man under the Moon helps single people find suitable marriage partners. This belief is so strong that many people put more faith in this custom than they do in Online dating. Single men and women, over 1000 of them, visited the temple during Chinese Lovers day. They come to pray and as the belief goes if they pray with sincerity their wish for the perfect match will be granted.
The temple encourages couples that had their wishes granted and got married to bring a piece of their wedding cake to the temple as a way of showing gratitude to the god. If the number of cakes is an indication, in the last ten years over 50,000 couples have tied the knot after praying at the temple. This custom also has some roots in the Catholic religion. Many women have lit candles and prayed to the Virgin Mary for the perfect husband. Many believe that the old fashioned ways have more benefits than modern technology. In fact one publication went so far as to say that Online dating is eroding our humanity. They said that Online dating services made dating, love and marriage a commodity issue and not one that relied on human interaction. Recently one Online dating site in China was being sued by a female member to its services. She said the site should screen members and help protect women from scammers.
The woman reported that she was swindled of her money by a male user who provided false personal information on the site. The male user has been sentenced to two and a half years of imprisonment by a Beijing court . If this case could be copied by other countries when it comes to online dating sites perhaps fewer criminals would use the services. But since Asian countries seem to prize marriage, honor and sincerity at a higher level then sex western countries man not ever see this form of justice.
